Mstislav Rostropovich was renowned not only as one of the great instrumentalists of the 20th century, but also as an outspoken champion of artistic freedom in the Soviet Union during the last decades of the Cold War. All six suites were recorded in one week at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City in December, 2008, following years of preparation by Mr. Bailey. "I was unaware of the depths of the music as a young person, but came to realize that there are so many ways of interpreting Bach that it channels where a cellist is at that precise moment. Anner Bylsma, who plays a Baroque cello in original condition, has written a whole book about the variety of bow strokes needed for this music. Fancying the use of the bow as an analogue to the use of a foil in a duel, he calls Bach a "fencing master," a term that implies intense training, physical coordination used with spontaneity, and a readiness to change the approach instantly as each successive, fast-moving challenge demands. His playing makes the music fresh and new with a flexibility and vitality that illustrates the thesis of his book. --Joe McLellan
Over the years, Bach s Cello Suites have become a monument to which all cellists pay homage. Though some of the greats waited until late in their careers to record them, (Casals, Rostropovich), others have recorded several versions (Yo-Yo Ma and Pieter Wispelwey two, Janos Starker three). Ophélie Gaillard is among the latter group. Her first recording earned international praise and a French Classical Music Award. Ten years later, she revisits Bach s masterworks performing on a cello made in 1737 by Matteo Goffriller, a contemporary of the composer.

Today it is difficult to understand that despite the tremendous Bach renaissance that took place in the 19th century many compositions by the Cantor of St. Thomas's Church in Leipzig had been underrated. The Cello Suites, for example, have been regarded for almost 300 years as purely a set of tricky etudes that every virtuoso in the making simply must tackle. What recording engineers and their equipment can bring to the ears is quite astounding. So it was back in the Thirties with Pablo Casal's legendary recording against which every cellist is measured today and to whose perfection he aspires... [Read More]
