Although singer/guitarist Odetta Gordon is most closely identified with the collegiate folk revival of the late '50s, she began her career singing blues in coffeehouses, and continued to play the blues regularly throughout her recording career. It's not surprising, since the blues is a vernacular form not at all far removed from the story-form ballads that are a huge part of the folk tradition, and so the dual focus on ballads and blues on this excellently sequenced 18-track compilation makes perfect sense.Opening with a rousing version of the gospel standard "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and closing with Odetta's famous "Spiritual Trilogy," the religious underpinnings of much of Odetta's work are readily apparent throughout. Elsewhere, blues standards like "Lowlands" and "'Buked and Scorned" sit beside classic folk ballads like "Greensleeves" and "The Fox." BEST OF BALLADS AND BLUES is an excellent introduction to this underappreciated artist.

Just as the comedy smash "What's The Worst That Could Happen" has a rhythmic flow, so does the soundtrack. With the bass pumping throughout, the best in the hip-hop game are represented on this compilation. Snoop Dogg's humor and rhyming skills separate him from the pack on "F&*k What They Say." He speaks from experience when he raps "No matter how money much you make or who you are, brothers will talk about you". Craig Mack introduces the chairman of the board to a new generation when he samples "High Hopes." Queen Latifah retains her throne on "Everywhere You Go," as Sarah Jane lends her soulful vocals to the track.A hot arrangement and tight production bolster the title track by Supa Friendz. Sam Logan whips up some smooth R&B on the Frankie Beverly-penned"Happy Feelin's". The first single and highlight here is the Erick Sermon/Marvin Gaye track "Music". It's easy to bemoan the Grammy Awards, particularly when it comes to the committee's understanding of rap. The first winner of the Best Rap Record was "Parents Just Don't Understand" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, so what do they know. Well, more than one might think, as evidenced by the track listing of nominees on this surprisingly beguiling collection. Everyone from Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott to Dr. Dre to, yes, Grammy fave Will Smith is represented on this compilation. They might even have selected the best hip-hop song of 1999 in The Roots' "The Next Movement." The Philly Crew appears again for their luscious collaboration with Erykah Badu "You Got Me." Eminem's "My Name Is" for all its unabashed white-boy rap leanings, was hard to hate, let alone ignore. Then there's Nas' "I Am" to account for the harder-edged contingent. Okay, some important artists of 1999 are overlooked; there's nothing by Mos Def, Pharoah Monche, or any of the various Wu-Tangers who released top-notch albums during 1999. However, for those who might doubt the Grammys, this compilation is eye-opening. Then again, looking back, "Parents Just Don't Understand" was pretty fun at the time.
