Latin American composers share many things, but the diversity found within their music adds as much to the culture of classical music as any of the individual shared traits. This collection of new compositions dating from 1985 to 1999 highlights the variety and verve of new practitioners of the Latin American sound.Commencing with the languorous luxury of Miguel Del Aguila's "Pacific Serenade," the album embraces the jazzier side of new music. The piece centers on the clarinet's melody line, employing blues idioms as well as traditional Brazilian folk song traditions.On the other side of the coin, Miton Estￃﾩvez's "Cantos Vivos y Cantos Rodados" is arranged for a combination of traditional ensemble and electronic equipment. Its rhythmic underpinnings create a taut, vital, and very unique take on the traditional canto.The works of ten different composers, artists with very distinct styles, make this album a wonderful exploration into the future of music. In this album, Vadim Repin plays Sarasate's "Ruby" Stradivari violin.Musical depictions of exotic, sunny climes from Italy to the Middle East were a favorite preoccupation of 19th century French composers. Spain was a particularly frequent destination, and the allure of Edouard Lalo's immensely popular 'Symphonie Espagnole' for violin and orchestra was further enhanced by the presence of its dedicatee, the great Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate, who even assisted the composer by providing folk melodies which were to be incorporated into the fabric.Recognized as one of the world's top violin virtuosos, Vadim Repin has a dazzling technique that betrays no limits, yet he also shows the ability to hold power in reserve when the music calls for it. His performance of the Lalo recalls descriptions of Sarasate's own playing, elegant, stylish and brilliant, in fact Repin even used the Spanish master's "Ruby" Stradivari violin for this recording. Elsewhere on the disc there is a sparkling reading of Maurice Ravel's gypsy portrait 'Tzigane' and a finely shaded one of Ernest Chausson's lyrical 'Poeme' that expertly tracks the work's voyage of dreamy yearning.
