McCutcheon is known as a first rate folk guitarist, but he underplays both his guitar skills and his folkie side in favor of full band arrangements featuring lots of electric instruments. This is ostensibly a children's album, but if you weren't listening intently to the skew of the lyrics, you'd just think it was a straight-up contemporary singer-songwriter effort. This recording continues McCutcheon's seasonal series, and it does contain songs about Halloween, Thanksgiving and such, but it seems to venture far beyond the theme. AUTUMNSONGS is ultimately a family album rather than just a kids' recording.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way.

With its characteristic emphasis on keyboards and percussion rather than horns, Son Del Solar is at its best, making Blades' lyrical masterpieces groove hard with a tropi-pop luster. At the congas sits session man Marc Quinones who, only a few years later, would introduce Latin percussion into that Southern blues rock totem, the Allman Brothers Band.The spirited rendition of "Decisiones" became a subsequent salsa club favorite, with the keen wit of its verses and fiercely catchy chorus. "El Padre Antonio" and "Buscando America" are each given long, hearty treatments, with Ruben calling out his stirring verses of Pan-American unity in epic fashion. An up-tempo "La Cancion Del Final Del Mundo" addresses the threat of nuclear war with deceptively good cheer, while 1978's "Pedro Navaja" slowly builds into a trombone-fueled anthem. Ruben's pithy banter with the audience makes the set a special treat for Spanish speakers.

Originally released as a 10 inch LP on Debut (3).Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).The centerpiece of JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL is a Bud Powell trio performance recorded in Toronto's Massey Hall in 1953. This concert marked a return for Powell to the concert scene after a one-year absence due to illness. While there are many compelling performances on the release--not only by Bud, but also by his bandmates, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach--as a whole, this release is an intriguing hybrid.Also included here are excerpts from a nightclub performance during the summer of that year, with Powell joined by George Duvivier (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). Accordingly, the sonic quality of the nightclub cuts carries a loose, off-the-cuff feel, while the Massey Hall concert is appropriately fuller sounding. Mingus is well represented here--his composition "Bass-ically Speaking" is included in this reissue, and it is a fine example of Mingus's work. Powell is at his best on "Embraceable You" and "Sure Thing," two Massey Hall cuts that display an expressive undertone and an uncanny connection with the audience.

It combines a few of the late-1960s sides the group recorded for Texas singer Johnny Nash (whose ska-inflected "Hold Me Tight" had been a big international hit in 1967) with material recorded for the band's own Wail'n Soul'm and Tuff Gong labels, and for the visionary producer Lee "Scratch" Perry.Songs such as "Small Axe," "Kaya," and "Lively Up Yourself" are all familiar from their later incarnations, and to hear them in their unadorned earlier versions, particularly the primitive recordings of "Stir It Up" and "Soul Rebel," is to experience both their simple power and Bob Marley's faith in their ultimate mass acceptance.
