PERSEVERANCIA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album.Puerto Rican salsa star Tito Rojas continues his winning streak of solo albums with PERSEVERANCIA. A lively outing carried by the charming vocals of Rojas, this set is highly rhythmic and immediately infectious. Songs such as "Me Enamoro Mas de Ti" and "Me Tiene Enamorao" shuffle giddily along, lifted by excellent horn arrangements, while "Como a Ti Te Gusta" features a slightly melancholy undercurrent. Overall, the proceedings are undeniably upbeat, and any listener will have a hard time resisting the urge to get up and dance to Rojas and his accomplished band of musicians.

However, their eponymously titled fourth album brought them to a hitherto unachieved level of prominence--almost, but not quite, turning them into international stars. Throughout her aptly named debut, DISTILLATION, you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, G. Love, the Faulknerian landscape of the first couple albums by the Band, and most obviously, the rural mythos best explored, from entirely different angles, by those Louisiana-born Williams non-sisters, Victoria and Lucinda.While nowhere near as helium-pitched, McKeown shares Victoria's fondness for odd, jazz-inflected phrasing, especially on the swooping vocal melody of the Tin Pan Alleyish "Didn't They?," on which McKeown soars and dives like a drunken seagull, or the Billie Holidayesque trills in "The Little Cowboy." What McKeown has in common with Lucinda Williams is her wry but essentially romantic, tradition-rooted but not bound lyrical stance. This recording continues McCutcheon's seasonal series, and it does contain songs about Halloween, Thanksgiving and such, but it seems to venture far beyond the theme. AUTUMNSONGS is ultimately a family album rather than just a kids' recording.
