  • Monk's Dreams - The Complete Compositions of Thelonious Sphere Monk

The genius of pianist and composer Thelonious Monk is unassailable. Since his death in 1982, he has become recognized as one of the greatest composers of jazz - and of the wider world of music. The year 2017 was the centennial of Monk's birth, and brought scores of tributes, including a well-received stay of pianist Frank Kimbrough's quartet at the Jazz Standard club in New York City. Like many jazz pianists, Kimbrough found Monk's music a revelation when he first heard it. From the outset of his career, Kimbrough has returned time and again to Monk's compositions. After nearly four decades of... [Read More]

  • Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (saxophone); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Christian McBride (bass instrument); Lewis Nash (drums).Recording information: Avatar, New York, New York (11/18/2003 - 11/19/2003).ILLUMINATIONS finds McCoy Tyner, some 40 years after his best-known work (as a member of John Coltrane's legendary early-1960s quartet), still kicking. Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the pianist started heading his own dates. On this 2004 album, as per usual, Tyner has surrounded himself with some of the finest personnel in jazz, including bassist Christian McBride, sax player Gary Bartz, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.Tyner's music is appealing for its balance of familiar hard-bop vocabulary and intricately wrought structures--it is rhythmic and accessible, yet intellectually engaging. Tyner plays with great vigor, mixing virtuoso classical flourishes with bold chords and dazzlingly complex solos. His compositions here touch on avant-bebop ("The Chase"), Latin groove ("Angelina"), and smooth swing (the title track--on which all the musicians get a chance to stretch out). Blanchard's playing is especially notable, substantiating the melody lines in the chorus and blazing on the solos (as on "New Orleans Stomp," driven by a classic second-line beat). The high quality of music here--in conception and execution--should come as no surprise to long-time fans of Tyner or his sidemen.

  • Personnel: Yusef Lateef, Ron Carter, Hugh Lawson, Herman Wright, Lex Humphries. Recorded in May 1960.Yusef Lateef is one of jazz's most fascinating instrumentalists. His experiments with flute and particularly oboe and bassoon have made Lateef much more than just another fine tenor saxophonist. On this 1960 release (produced by Orrin Keepnews), we hear the many sides to Lateef's musical personality. Indeed, the title undoubtedly refers to Lateef's interest in sax, flute and oboe respectively. Given this, track one, "Goin' Home" is a medium-tempo swing that highlights Lateef's refined, smoky tenor sound. However, on the next track, Lateef switches to oboe, navigating his way through Duke Ellington's bluesy chart, "I'm Just a Lucky So and So." Other tunes such as "Lateef's Minor 7th" and "Adoration" feature Lateef's soaring flute chops. In general, the music on THE THREE FACES OF YUSEF LATEEF showcases the reed man's straight-ahead jazz skill as well his penchant for experimental composition. The latter is best epitomized by the semi-classical piece, "From Within" written by Lateef himself and featuring pianist Hugh Lawson on celeste, drummer Lex Humphries on timpani, and bassist Ron Carter on cello.
