  • I'm Dying Up Here: Heartbreak and High Times in Stand-up Comedy's Golden Era

In the mid-1970s, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Andy Kaufman, Richard Lewis, Robin Williams, Elayne Boosler, Tom Dreesen, and several hundred other shameless showoffs and incorrigible cutups from across the country migrated en masse to Los Angeles, the new home of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. There, in a late-night world of sex, drugs, dreams and laughter, they created an artistic community unlike any before or since. It was Comedy Camelot—but it couldn't last.William Knoedelseder was then a cub reporter covering the burgeoning local comedy scene for the Los Angeles Times. He wrote the first m... [Read More]

  • If you're still watching the Letterman show on your mono-speaker TV, hearing your favorite contemporary bands and musical legends in exciting one-shot performances from the program on this great-sounding disc should be a real treat. Featured are some of the giants of the music world; Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach are backed up by a string orchestra and the trademark Bacharach flugelhorns. Flea contributes his distinctive bass work to Jewel's "You Belong To Me." Lenny Kravitz and his band rock the house with "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and Patti Smith and band rock it hard with the closing number "Who Do You Love." The programming on the disc was done thoughtfully, and the performances flow like a well planned concert.

  • Antonio Vivaldi is best known for his many string concertos, yet he excelled in almost every genre. Vivaldi wrote countless chamber works, dozens of fine operas, solo voice motets, and sublime sacred choral works. Vivaldi's greatest choral works were written while he served as maestro of the famous Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. The Pieta was an orphanage for girls and Vivaldi wrote some of his most demanding music for his gifted students. The works on this disc display all the hallmarks of Vivaldi's mature style: melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality and a keen sense of drama. The orchestral accompaniment for these works is filled with the same color and lyrical richness that's found in Vivaldi's many concertos. There are many glorious moments in this music, perhaps the most memorable is the heavenly ascending vocal line of "Exortum est in tenebris" from the motet, "Beatus vir." Soprano Susan Gritton sings the work with crystal clear intonation and tonal beauty. The performances by all the vocal soloists and the excellent period instrument ensemble, the Kings Consort, make a very strong case for these little known but remarkable works.
