Vivaldi's greatest choral works were written while he served as maestro of the famous Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. With its characteristic emphasis on keyboards and percussion rather than horns, Son Del Solar is at its best, making Blades' lyrical masterpieces groove hard with a tropi-pop luster. At the congas sits session man Marc Quinones who, only a few years later, would introduce Latin percussion into that Southern blues rock totem, the Allman Brothers Band.The spirited rendition of "Decisiones" became a subsequent salsa club favorite, with the keen wit of its verses and fiercely catchy chorus. "El Padre Antonio" and "Buscando America" are each given long, hearty treatments, with Ruben calling out his stirring verses of Pan-American unity in epic fashion. An up-tempo "La Cancion Del Final Del Mundo" addresses the threat of nuclear war with deceptively good cheer, while 1978's "Pedro Navaja" slowly builds into a trombone-fueled anthem. Ruben's pithy banter with the audience makes the set a special treat for Spanish speakers.

Many of Maurice Ravel's friends believed that the love he shared with his mother was the only love he ever knew, and that Ravel's second and final opera, 'L'Enfant et les Sortilges' (first performed in 1925), was the composers tribute to that relationship. This tender and delightfully whimsical tale imagines a naughty boy who must confront the inanimate objects, insects, and animals of his naughtiness, for they have suddenly sprung to (human) life and now sing. According to Ravel, "The emphasis is on melody, allied to a subject which I chose to treat in the spirit of American musical comedy." In that spirit, the opera is comprised of a series of lyrical vignettes that culminate in the animals' moving final hymn of praise to the redeemed child.The conductor Andrￃﾩ Previn could not be better suited to Ravel's wonderfully eclectic score, which ranges from ragtime and fox-trots to 18th-century courtly dances. Charged with animating Ravel's inhuman menagerie, the cast remains vocally vibrant throughout. Both in this piece and in the other piece on this disk, Ravel's ballet 'Ma Mￃﾨre l'Oye' (adapted from the piano suite), the London Symphony Orchestra plays with satisfying grace.
