Contains 75-plus minutes of brilliantly remastered "sheets of sounds". Favorites from their complete Elektra repertoir including the rare B-side "It's Not A Game" and the essential smath "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.). Includes cuts from the hit soundtracks Poetic Justice and Menace II Society and "Take Your Time" from Pete Rock's solo debut, Soul Survivor. Liner notes from Village Voice contributor Charlie Braxton, who deems Rock "one of hip-hop's most innovative producers ever."
For awhile there, ol' Pete had a pretty nifty solo career going. Who Came First, his 1972 solo debut, sidestepped comparisons to the Who by tackling spiritual themes with low-key charm, qualities that resurfaced on Rough Mix, his wonderful 1977 duo record with Ronnie Lane. Then came Empty Glass, which was both grand and successful, like peak Who. From then on, Townshend's been mostly grandiose and unsuccessful. Meaning this solo overview ain't half bad and is mostly very good. --Steven Stolder
2008 release, the essential guide to Folk singer Pete Seeger's most influential period. Seeger's contribution to American cultural life over the past 60 years is enormous. His songs and recordings were hugely influential across the musical spectrum, for artists such as the Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Lonnie Donegan and Trini Lopez, as well as being influenced himself by the great Woody Guthrie. The music on this retrospective album has been drawn from the many fine recordings made for the highly respected Folkways label during the mid-'50s to late-'60s. Features 22 songs. Album compiled and sle... [Read More]
There's a perfectly valid reason to own this album. Unfortunately, it has little to do with the music contained on the disc. Perhaps the most notorious, terminated drummer in rock & roll history, Pete Best was, of course, the original skinman in the Beatles. This 16-song collection is culled from mid-'60s sessions by Best's post-Fab ensemble, an otherwise unremarkable unit that could only coast on the fame of its unfortunate namesake for so long. While a few tracks are appealing--the robust opener "All Aboard," the Jagger/Richards-penned "Off the Hook"--most are hampered by shoddy production a... [Read More]
With his first solo album, Pete Rock reminds us why his past work with partner CL Smooth resulted in some of the most luscious hip-hop beats the art form has ever known. While Rock's lyrical presence falters, his musical craft makes up the difference as the Soul Brother No. 1 switches from the sublimely soulful ("Mind Blowin'") to the ultrafunky ("Da Two") to the dramatically sinister ("The Game"). Soul Survivor may lack the lyrical credentials to contend to be the year's best hip-hop album, but it easily ranks as one of the year's most listenable efforts. Sit down, max, and relax to the sultr... [Read More]
