Porgy and Bess is an English-language opera by the American composer George Gershwin, with a libretto written by author DuBose Heyward and lyricist Ira Gershwin. It was adapted from Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward's play Porgy, itself an adaptation of DuBose Heyward's 1925 novel of the same name. Porgy and Bess was first performed in Boston on September 30, 1935, before it moved to Broadway in New York City. It featured a cast of classically trained African-American singers--a daring artistic choice at the time. After suffering from an initially unpopular public reception due in part to its... RCA's 1963 highlights disc brought the stars of the early-1950s revival of the work, Leontyne Price and William Warfield, together again. By this time, however, Price was well advanced on her meteoric rise to operatic stardom and Warfield was gaining renown as a recitalist. Both are glorious here and Price's shimmering "Summertime" is worth the price of the disc. A plus is the spirited Sportin' Life of John W. Bubbles, who created the role in the original 1935 production; an old-time vaudevillian, he wrings fun and irony from his all-too-short excerpts. Henderson conducts with vigor and RCA'... [Read More]

George Gershwin's folk opera has been a source of inspiration for countless jazz musicians. This 1959 recording with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen (who had replaced guitarist Herb Ellis the previous year) features some of Peterson's most impassioned and bluesy playing. With the addition of a drummer, he was liberated from rhythm duties to become the trio's dominant solo voice. Producer Norman Granz, who frequently featured Peterson in his Jazz at the Philharmonic all-star tours of the 1950s, had the musicians work out the arrangements in the studio with a minimum of rehearsal. That ... [Read More]

Of Thee I Sing/Let 'Em Eat Cake was one of the leading recordings during the Gershwin CD revival of the late 1980s. Led by Gershwin expert Michael Tilson Thomas using some newly discovered materials, it resuscitated two nearly forgotten satires from the 1930s sung by casts who were better able to capture the spirit of the music than the opera stars who were in vogue at the time. Larry Kert (the original Tony in West Side Story) played goofy U.S. presidential candidate John P. Wintergreen, who decides to run his campaign on a theme of love. He promises to marry the winner of a beauty contest, o... [Read More]
Digitally remastered edition of the 1959 motion picture soundtrack. Originally a 1935 opera written by George Gershwin, Porgy And Bess was made into a film with Sidney Poitier playing Porgy and Dorothy Dandridge as Bess. These are not the voices you will hear on this album, however, for Robert McFerrin dubbed the singing voice of Sidney and Adele Addison did the same for Dorothy. Other actors in the film were also dubbed, including Diahann Carroll, although not surprisingly Sammy Davis Jr does his own singing. Hallmark. 2010.
