Claudio Abbado conducts the Orchestra Mozart with Giuliano Carmignola, principal violinist, live at the Teatro Municipale Valli, Reggio Emilia, April 21, 2007.
Benjamin Britten's Bach is a "middle-of-the-road" version of these delightful works. They offer no startling departures from the Baroque style favored in the 1960s, but are ripe, polished performances with a fearless trumpet soloist in No. 2, and outstanding flute and violin solos throughout. Modern instruments and moderate tempos may seem stodgy these days, but there's integrity in Britten's music-making and this set, recorded in 1968, still sounds fresh, easily holding its own against more recent versions. As an added attraction, London includes concerti for violin and oboe, and flute and st... [Read More]

Reinhard Goebel and Musica Antiqua Köln recorded the Brandenburgs in 1986-87 in a style that one can refer to only as punk Baroque. Their readings are characterized by slashing accents, missing articulations, a de-emphasis of melody, and an overemphasis of metrical pulse, with an attendant exaggeration of Bach's otherwise wonderfully enlivening syncopations. Occasionally, the most peculiarly anachronistic cadential ritards get thrown in as well. The result has all the charm of an antipersonnel mine. For an idea of what their "extreme" Bach sounds like, listen to the first movement of Concerto... [Read More]
The Six Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) are considered by musicians, critics and audiences alike among the finest musical compositions of the baroque era. Bach presented the concertos to the Margrave of Brandenburg, Christian Ludwig, in Berlin, March 24, 1721, with the hopes some patronage would come his way. The music was preserved in the Brandenburg archives, and when rediscovered in the 19th century became some of the most beloved music of all time. Beloved is the operative word in this re-release of the masterpieces in the hands of Jeanne Lamon and the Tafelmusik... [Read More]
Better than most, Karl Richter knew that the Brandenburg Concertos are serious fun and ought to be played that way. There is a sense of joy in these wry readings, of something elevated but at the same time earthy and jaunty and not too pious, that still delights after a quarter of a century-- and nowhere does one get a better feeling for the extraordinary efflorescence of Bach's genius. The accounts are briskly paced and soloistic in approach, with every participant freely involoved. While the intonation is at times a little less than precise, the overall effect is delightfully fresh and music... [Read More]
Concertos BWV1052, BWV1058, BWV1055, BWV1054, BWV1053, BWV1056, BWV1057 - Concerto Brandebourgeois BWV1050 - Triple concerto BWV1044 / Angela Hewitt, piano - Australian Chamber Orch., dir. Richard Tognetti
Sir Neville Marriner's account of Bach's first three Brandenburg Concertos--a studio recording from 1980--is surprisingly sturdy. It holds up well against considerable competition, and serves as a fine example of modern instrument interpretation and style. Articulation is remarkably clean--a testimony to the exceptional skill of the Academy's musicians--tempos are bright, there's abundant energy, and nothing is overdone. This is a good first choice, especially if you prefer modern strings and winds. --David Vernier
