  • Beethoven: Violin Concerto

Beethoven's Violin Concerto represents a supreme challenge for violinists. Far from being a virtuoso display piece, this is chamber music on a large scale. A lukewarm reception at the concerto's premiere in 1806 led to it being forgotten until Joseph Joachim resurrected the work in the 1850's and restored to its rightful position as one of the greatest and most popular concertos for the instrument. This is James Ehnes's first recording of this concerto, and he is supported sensitively by the award winning Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led by fellow violinist turned conductor Andrew Ma... • Beethoven / Sibelius Violin Concertos (Essential Classics)

The Sibelius Violin Concerto was a David Oistrakh specialty. He brought to it a personal warmth and poetry, and he made the most of what critics call Sibelius's "Russian melancholy," which is the term applied to Russian music when it sounds most Finnish. But seriously, the great Finnish composer was a strong admirer of Tchaikovsky, whose Violin Concerto was another Oistrakh specialty. Eugene Ormandy's Sibelius credentials were similarly well established at the time that this great recording was made. At a budget price, with a terrific Beethoven Violin Concerto tossed in, you'd have to be nuts ... [Read More]

  • ON TOP came just a year after the release of Mountain's first greatest hits collection, 1973's BEST OF. It's a budget priced compilation with a more concise track listing. These 10 tracks will be well known to classic rock aficionados everywhere.Guitarist Leslie West was one of the biggest guitar heroes of the early '70s, taking Eric Clapton's fluid blues riffs and turbocharging them with the energy and explosiveness of Led Zeppelin. One of rock radio's most frequently played tracks, "Mississippi Queen," is featured, as well as such metallic rockers as "Don't Look Around," "Never in My Life," and "Roll Over Beethoven," and more tranquil moments such as "Boys in the Band" and "Theme for an Imaginary Western."

  • This disc contains both DDD and ADD recordings.Record collectors know Noel Lee as the pianist whose recordings appeared on the emergent Nonesuch label in the 1960s, but he has also had a distinguished career as a composer. Born in 1924, Lee has impeccable credentials, from studies with Walter Piston at Harvard to the obligatory pilgrimage to Paris and Nadia Boulanger. Boulanger's teaching stressed the neo-classical ideal of clarity, and that is reflected in Lee's music, along with the serial organization that prevailed in the fifties when he found his voice.Aaron Copland said Lee was defined by "cool intensity." and this disc shows it. Coolness can be felt as an attitude in the "Caprices on the name Schoenberg," a piano concerto in which the protagonist lurks around the shadowy edges of an orchestral film noir, and it is tangible in the spare, metallic textures heard there and in "Convergences," a jagged, jangling duo for flute and harpsichord. The intensity reaches its peak in the "Dialogues" for violin and piano in which a winding, four-note motive is subjected to hundreds of permutations. This is not music which fades into the background gladly, but it will reward attentive listening.
