  • Classical music has had a few really popular stars, Puccini, Offenbach, Philip Glass, composers whose works were readily gobbled up by a waiting public the minute the ink was dry, but none could surpass the box office appeal of Johann Strauss Jr. For half a century the Waltz King played to sold-out houses in Austria, Europe, and America, and while demand for his memorably tuneful waltzes and polkas never ceased, neither did his capacity to supply them, with his catalog numbering more than 500.This Naxos disc is the first of 10 volumes collecting the best material from Marco Polo's monumental series of the complete Strauss orchestral works. Each volume features two or three of the most famous hits coupled with lesser known but often no less interesting items. Here, for example, you get the overture to 'Die Fledermaus' and the 'Emperor Waltz' alongside Strauss' very first published waltz, 'Sinngedichte' and the novel 'Explosions Polka,' which employs pyrotechnic party favors. The performances, by a variety of orchestras and conductors, are consistently fine and well recorded.

  • Just as the comedy smash "What's The Worst That Could Happen" has a rhythmic flow, so does the soundtrack. With the bass pumping throughout, the best in the hip-hop game are represented on this compilation. Snoop Dogg's humor and rhyming skills separate him from the pack on "F&*k What They Say." He speaks from experience when he raps "No matter how money much you make or who you are, brothers will talk about you". Craig Mack introduces the chairman of the board to a new generation when he samples "High Hopes." Queen Latifah retains her throne on "Everywhere You Go," as Sarah Jane lends her soulful vocals to the track.A hot arrangement and tight production bolster the title track by Supa Friendz. Sam Logan whips up some smooth R&B on the Frankie Beverly-penned"Happy Feelin's". The first single and highlight here is the Erick Sermon/Marvin Gaye track "Music". An unreleased Gaye vocal track is layered over a strong beat (courtesy of producer Sermon). Snoop passes the mic to his female protege's Doggy's Angels on the funky "Shoot "Em Up."

This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano). The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

  • Although singer/guitarist Odetta Gordon is most closely identified with the collegiate folk revival of the late '50s, she began her career singing blues in coffeehouses, and continued to play the blues regularly throughout her recording career. It's not surprising, since the blues is a vernacular form not at all far removed from the story-form ballads that are a huge part of the folk tradition, and so the dual focus on ballads and blues on this excellently sequenced 18-track compilation makes perfect sense.Opening with a rousing version of the gospel standard "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" and closing with Odetta's famous "Spiritual Trilogy," the religious underpinnings of much of Odetta's work are readily apparent throughout. Elsewhere, blues standards like "Lowlands" and "'Buked and Scorned" sit beside classic folk ballads like "Greensleeves" and "The Fox." BEST OF BALLADS AND BLUES is an excellent introduction to this underappreciated artist.

  • Includes liner notes by Don Kennedy.Digitally remastered by Gary Rice.Trying to capture Louis Armstrong's best on a single CD is a hopeless task. Even a brief perusal of the many "best of" collections on the market shows that Armstrong had too many sides to pin down with a few tracks. There is Armstrong, the cornet virtuoso, playing with the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens; there's Armstrong, the gruff-voiced singer, who could turn a throwaway lyric into poetry; there is Armstrong, the pop star, fronting a big band; and there is Armstrong, the "Ambassador of Goodwill," performing with his touring All-Stars.Despite a cover photo from much later, Intersound's BEST OF wisely sticks to a single period of Armstrong's career-namely his early days fronting small groups. The booklet provides little information about the particular recordings, but they are primarily taken from the Hot Fives and Sevens of the late 1920s. These are the performances that made Armstrong a star-"Mahogany Hall Stomp," "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Heebie Jeebies," his first foray into scat. Digital remastering has rendered these songs in a slightly different light, punching up the sound while adding a "modern" touch of reverb. In any event, these recordings are required listening for every red-blooded American.
