Throughout her aptly named debut, DISTILLATION, you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, G. Love, the Faulknerian landscape of the first couple albums by the Band, and most obviously, the rural mythos best explored, from entirely different angles, by those Louisiana-born Williams non-sisters, Victoria and Lucinda.While nowhere near as helium-pitched, McKeown shares Victoria's fondness for odd, jazz-inflected phrasing, especially on the swooping vocal melody of the Tin Pan Alleyish "Didn't They?," on which McKeown soars and dives like a drunken seagull, or the Billie Holidayesque trills in "The Little Cowboy." What McKeown has in common with Lucinda Williams is her wry but essentially romantic, tradition-rooted but not bound lyrical stance. The countryish "La Petite Mort," with its sly sex-and-religion twining, would not have sounded out of place on CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.

Hollywood, California and Larrabee Studios, Hollywood, California.A cursory listen to DISCLAIMER reveals a debt to such U.S. heavy rock bands as Papa Roach and Drowning Pool, no great shock since Seether producer Jay Baumgardner had previously worked with both of those bands. The surprising part is that this very American-sounding nu-metal band actually comes from South Africa. Their homeland is where the Dave Matthews Band comparisons abruptly end, though. Seether goes for the time-tested power-trio format that's served hard-hitting rock bands in good stead throughout the decades, from Mountain to Nirvana. Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Shaun Morgan is at the heart of the group's sound, his angst-ridden lyrics and emotive delivery occasionally suggesting the influence of the aforementioned Kurt Cobain-fronted band. Grunge flavoring to the contrary, though, this is a solidly contemporary band whose sheer sonic force puts them directly in the forefront of circa-2002 heavy rock.

However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

The music world eventually caught up, trip-hop happened, and the combination proffered by 1996's landmark BEAT quickly became commonplace. LUSHLIFE, Bowery Electric's belated follow-up, strikes back with stronger songs and sharper production, bucking the trip-hop trend.LUSHLIFE's after-dark cityscape incorporates the best atmospheric elements of hip-hop, dub, downtempo, and soundtrack design. Profound basslines burrow beneath velvety string swatches ("Deep Blue," "Lushlife") and organ shimmers, guitars glittering everywhere like motes of stardust. Chandler's programming and production match the sparse, spooky eloquence of the RZA's Wu-Tang work, particularly on "Psalms of Survival," "Saved," and the album finale "Passages." Schwendener's vocals drift dreamily, surveying an unbroken neon skyline of samples, scratches, and breakbeats. The sweet pop snarl of "Freedom Fighter" makes for an ideal single, though the song seems slightly at odds with the album's finely tuned melancholic mood.
