Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the pianist started heading his own dates. On this 2004 album, as per usual, Tyner has surrounded himself with some of the finest personnel in jazz, including bassist Christian McBride, sax player Gary Bartz, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.Tyner's music is appealing for its balance of familiar hard-bop vocabulary and intricately wrought structures--it is rhythmic and accessible, yet intellectually engaging. Tyner plays with great vigor, mixing virtuoso classical flourishes with bold chords and dazzlingly complex solos. His compositions here touch on avant-bebop ("The Chase"), Latin groove ("Angelina"), and smooth swing (the title track--on which all the musicians get a chance to stretch out). Blanchard's playing is especially notable, substantiating the melody lines in the chorus and blazing on the solos (as on "New Orleans Stomp," driven by a classic second-line beat). The high quality of music here--in conception and execution--should come as no surprise to long-time fans of Tyner or his sidemen.

This collection of chamber pieces prominently features Richard Festinger's jazz influences. The same ingenuity that made him a respected jazz performer gives his classical work a refreshing playfulness. Whereas so much contemporary composition can sound stilted and academic, Festinger has a soloist's flair for creating and releasing dramatic tension."Tapestries" starts off this album with some of Festinger's signature unpredictability. Nervous glissandos by violin and cello along with unusual cadence from the piano build the piece's energy, leading to a dramatic climax. The three movements are played without pause, adding to the unsettled excitement.Built upon the format's rich history, his String Quartet is influenced by the likes of Bartￃﾳk and Berg. Nevertheless, within the self-imposed constraints of the classical idiom, Festinger is able to push the boundaries. His sensibilities and aesthetic are center stage in this fascinating recording.

NEW JAZZ CONCEPTIONS, recorded when Evans was just 26, merges his articulate, vigorous playing with the music of fellow Tony Scott Quartet musicians Teddy Kotick on bass and the extroverted Paul Motian on drums. The album's four original compositions include "Five," a witty, complicated song which makes clever use of the chords from "I Got Rhythm," and the disjointed, slightly off-kilter "Displacement," a study in a common Evans theme of playing against the meter and around the beat of a composition. The most remarkable material is the wonderfully eloquent piano solo, "Waltz for Debby," written for Evans's niece, which became perhaps the most renowned classic of his musical career.
