Originally released as a 10 inch LP on Debut (3).Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).The centerpiece of JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL is a Bud Powell trio performance recorded in Toronto's Massey Hall in 1953. This concert marked a return for Powell to the concert scene after a one-year absence due to illness. While there are many compelling performances on the release--not only by Bud, but also by his bandmates, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach--as a whole, this release is an intriguing hybrid.Also included here are excerpts from a nightclub performance during the summer of that year, with Powell joined by George Duvivier (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). Accordingly, the sonic quality of the nightclub cuts carries a loose, off-the-cuff feel, while the Massey Hall concert is appropriately fuller sounding. Mingus is well represented here--his composition "Bass-ically Speaking" is included in this reissue, and it is a fine example of Mingus's work. Powell is at his best on "Embraceable You" and "Sure Thing," two Massey Hall cuts that display an expressive undertone and an uncanny connection with the audience.

"mOBSCENE," reeks of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. "Para Noir" offers a romantic agenda in grand Manson style, with little chance for radio edit status. "Better Of Two Evils" and "Your Fist And Not Your Mouth" rally with undeniable choruses while "This Is The New Shit" nails a Korn-inflected groove. The set's down-tempo title track is built around a haunting piano line, and "(s)AINT" deftly captures the Powerman 5000 style. The album track most likely to get extensive re-mixing is the incredibly catchy "Ka-boom Ka-boom." THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way.

With its characteristic emphasis on keyboards and percussion rather than horns, Son Del Solar is at its best, making Blades' lyrical masterpieces groove hard with a tropi-pop luster. At the congas sits session man Marc Quinones who, only a few years later, would introduce Latin percussion into that Southern blues rock totem, the Allman Brothers Band.The spirited rendition of "Decisiones" became a subsequent salsa club favorite, with the keen wit of its verses and fiercely catchy chorus. "El Padre Antonio" and "Buscando America" are each given long, hearty treatments, with Ruben calling out his stirring verses of Pan-American unity in epic fashion. An up-tempo "La Cancion Del Final Del Mundo" addresses the threat of nuclear war with deceptively good cheer, while 1978's "Pedro Navaja" slowly builds into a trombone-fueled anthem. Ruben's pithy banter with the audience makes the set a special treat for Spanish speakers.

Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.Digitally remasterd by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).THE HAWK THAT FLIES HIGH is a swingin' small group session lead by Coleman Hawkins in 1957. This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano).The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.
