Instrumentation-wise, it makes use of violins and a simple, two-row "Cajun" accordion, as well as untraditional electric guitars and drums to modernize the sound. There are songs by venerable Cajun musicians such as Michael Doucet and Dewey Balfa, as well as the purely traditional cuts. As the listener will immediately hear, they are presented in a most engaging way.It is fascinating to compare File's rendition of "Pine Grove Blues," also known as "Ma Negresse," written by Nathan Abshire, to a zydeco version, say that of Fernest Arceneaux. File always performs slow waltzes, such as "La Valse de Kaplan," where Ward Lormand's plaintive vocals are quite evocative. Lyrics are provided in the liner notes, as well as translations from the French, as this disc is mostly in French. The songs are well annotated, which makes them more accessible to the average listener.
