  • Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (saxophone); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Christian McBride (bass instrument); Lewis Nash (drums).Recording information: Avatar, New York, New York (11/18/2003 - 11/19/2003).ILLUMINATIONS finds McCoy Tyner, some 40 years after his best-known work (as a member of John Coltrane's legendary early-1960s quartet), still kicking. Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the pianist started heading his own dates. On this 2004 album, as per usual, Tyner has surrounded himself with some of the finest personnel in jazz, including bassist Christian McBride, sax player Gary Bartz, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.Tyner's music is appealing for its balance of familiar hard-bop vocabulary and intricately wrought structures--it is rhythmic and accessible, yet intellectually engaging. Tyner plays with great vigor, mixing virtuoso classical flourishes with bold chords and dazzlingly complex solos. His compositions here touch on avant-bebop ("The Chase"), Latin groove ("Angelina"), and smooth swing (the title track--on which all the musicians get a chance to stretch out). Blanchard's playing is especially notable, substantiating the melody lines in the chorus and blazing on the solos (as on "New Orleans Stomp," driven by a classic second-line beat). The high quality of music here--in conception and execution--should come as no surprise to long-time fans of Tyner or his sidemen.

  • LOVE SCENES was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano); Russell Malone (guitar); Christian McBride (bass guitar).Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, New York.On LOVE SCENES, Diana Krall utilizes the same trio format she used on her critically acclaimed ALL FOR YOU. And it's easy to understand why: the simple instrumentation--Krall plus guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Chrisian McBride--is the perfect setting for her sultry voice and relaxed piano playing. She offers 12 delightful interpretations of well-chosen, romance-related standards. The three musicians have a wonderful rapport (both Malone and McBride have played on previous Krall albums), and each tune exhibits an easy, effortless swing. Krall' s piano playing is sensitive and lyrical on the ballads, and right in the groove on the uptempo numbers. Malone's full, rich tone blends perfectly with Krall's piano accompaniment, and McBride's formidable bass playing punctuates the trio's every nuance on this drumless date.

  • Personnel includes: Erin McKeown (vocals, various instruments); Dave Chalfant(electric guitar, upright & electric basses, percussion, samples); Katryna Nields, Beth Amsel (background vocals).Recorded at Sackamusic Studios, Amhearst, Massachusetts between October 1999 & January 2000.Virginia-born and New England-based, Erin McKeown's musical roots seem to lie somewhere in the deep South. Throughout her aptly named debut, DISTILLATION, you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, G. Love, the Faulknerian landscape of the first couple albums by the Band, and most obviously, the rural mythos best explored, from entirely different angles, by those Louisiana-born Williams non-sisters, Victoria and Lucinda. While nowhere near as helium-pitched, McKeown shares Victoria's fondness for odd, jazz-inflected phrasing, especially on the swooping vocal melody of the Tin Pan Alleyish "Didn't They?," on which McKeown soars and dives like a drunken seagull, or the Billie Holidayesque trills in "The Little Cowboy." What McKeown has in common with Lucinda Williams is her wry but essentially romantic, tradition-rooted but not bound lyrical stance. The countryish "La Petite Mort," with its sly sex-and-religion twining, would not have sounded out of place on CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.

  • Personnel: Common Sense (vocals); Tony Orbach (saxophone); Lenny Underwood (keyboards); Kenny Aaronson (bass); Twilite Tone, Tarsha Jones (background vocals); Immenslope, Rayshel.Producers: Immenslope, The Beat Nuts, Twilite Tone. The first album by Chicago MC Common, CAN I BORROW A DOLLAR?, is widely accepted in hip-hop's underground as a classic. Raw cuts like "Blows to the Temple" demonstrate why, and give listeners a glimpse at a legend in the making. With CAN I BORROW A DOLLAR?, a younger, more careless Common was simply out to demonstrate his talents to a nation obsessed with New York and L.A. rap. The lo-fi beat structure of the album is reminiscent of the music of the early '90s, when heavy jazz and funk influences dominated East Coast hip-hop. Though the disc is layered with gritty beats and samples that now seem familiar, they seem vibrant when put into context with other material of the same era. The Beatnuts offer one of their early productions on "Heidi Hoe," a track that may shock listeners who are used to Common's more reflective, socially aware lyrics of today. While certainly not his best work, die-hard fans won't be disappointed.

Includes linernotes by Michael Feinstein. MICHAEL FEINSTEIN WITH THE ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA was nominated forthe 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.Though he's one of the premier modern interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Michael Feinstein went until 2001 without ever releasing an album featuring symphony orchestra. His intimate, cabaret-bred interpretive style might strike some as an unusual match for full orchestra, but Alan Broadbent's arrangements (and the orchestra's innate gifts) ensure that Feinstein's up-close-and-personal vocal approach is never overwhelmed. Whether delivering a lovelorn ballad like "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" or getting bold and swinging on "The Best Is Yet To Come," Feinstein glides along smoothly on the sensuous sonic blanket the orchestra provides, making for a rich, distinctive recording.

Johnson (trombone); Hank Jones (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Oscar Pettiford (bass); Jo Jones (drums).Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on March 12 & 15, 1957. Originally released on Riverside (233). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.Digitally remasterd by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).THE HAWK THAT FLIES HIGH is a swingin' small group session lead by Coleman Hawkins in 1957. This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano). The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

  • Soft Machine: Elton Dean (alto saxophone, electric piano); Mike Ratledge (electric piano, organ); Hugh Hopper (bass guitar); John Marshall (drums).Recording information: Paris, France (05/02/1972).Those whose interest in British jazz-rock legend Soft Machine ceases at the point where drummer/singer Robert Wyatt left the band in 1971 stand to have their preconceptions shattered by this two-disc live recording of the band's subsequent phase. One of numerous revelatory live Soft Machine recordings released posthumously by Cuneiform Records, LIVE IN PARIS catches the group in transition. With John Marshall (former bandmate of UK free-jazzer Keith Tippett) replacing Wyatt, Soft Machine moved definitively away from rock trappings toward a jazzier, more cerebral approach that further accentuated the improvisatory abilities of keyboardist Mike Ratledge and saxman Elton Dean. They prove themselves fully able to tackle the bulk of their landmark Wyatt-era album THIRD here. However, tracks that would appear shortly after this May '72 concert on FIFTH show the band flexing new muscles. Dean's post-Coltrane solos and Ratledge's trademark fuzz-organ lines bob and weave through tunes that show the quartet to be no slouches in the compositional department (of course Dean, Ratledge and bassist Hugh Hopper had already contributed mightily to the band's songbook before Wyatt left). Three of these tracks would never make it to the studio, as this mighty lineup would splinter before FIFTH was even released, making LIVE IN PARIS all the more special.
