  • Guitar Sweep Picking & Arpeggios

Sweep picking and arpeggios are among the most useful hard rock/metal/shred techniques, though they are also applicable to any style. Joe Stump takes you through studies, etudes, and track excerpts ranging from the basic aspects of arpeggio play to some of the most technically intense sweep-picking material you'll ever encounter. These demonstrations, exercises and play-along tracks will help you master sweeping as you practice them with a full band, in real musical settings. Tablature is included.

  • Solo performer: Bob Mould (vocals, various instruments).Recorded at Granny 6, New York, New York and Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York.Bob Mould's fifth solo album, and his first after a four-year self-imposed retirement (during which he worked as a writer and script supervisor for World Championship Wrestling), is about as big a change as his first solo album, 1989's delicate and introspective WORKBOOK, had been from his days in Husker Du. This is to say that although MODULATE sounds quite different on a casual first listen, further exploration reveals that Mould's familiar themes and singular writing and performing style are present and accounted for.The difference on MODULATE is that for the first time in his career, Mould introduces synthesizers and other electronic instruments into his music. Although the album was initially touted as Mould's foray into full-blown electronica, the electronics are actually rather sparingly applied; only a couple of tracks, most notably the opening "180 Rain," do away with the guitars entirely. Most of the rest of the songs, particularly the moving "Author's Lament," would be right at home on any of Mould's previous solo records. MODULATE is at heart not unlike Neil Young's TRANS: an album that is less of a stylistic sidestep than it initially appears.

Includes liner notes by Terence Yallop.Oboe player Russel Walder, late of Windham Hill recording duo Stein & Walder, makes his solo debut with an album of heart-opening, mid-tempo instrumentals that lean more toward classical music than toward the jazz-tinged work of his earlier career. The smoky tones of oboe add to but never dominate the material. Walder employs synths, samples, and wordless female vocals to paint panoramas of indigenous New Zealand (where the album was recorded). Not only is Walder a skilled and expressive oboe player, he is also capable of writing striking compositions like "This Moment Now," a stately canon whose melody strives forward and cycles back like time itself. For all its space and vastness, the music never becomes bombastic. The moderate pace suits meditative endeavors, massage or relaxation.

  • Personnel: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, saxophone, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass, drums, loops); John (guitar, strings, piano); Tim Skold (guitar, accordion, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, programming); MW Gacy (keyboards, synthesizer, loops); Ginger Fish (drums).Producers: Marilyn Manson, Tim Skold, Ben Grosse.Recorded at Doppelherz, The Mix Room, Burbank, California and Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California."Mobscene" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.Marilyn Manson proudly wears his musical influences on his band's fifth studio album, where the perpetually androgynous singer and company continue their crusade of industrial rock outrage, making nods to forerunners while never losing that which is quintessentially Manson. "mOBSCENE," reeks of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. "Para Noir" offers a romantic agenda in grand Manson style, with little chance for radio edit status. "Better Of Two Evils" and "Your Fist And Not Your Mouth" rally with undeniable choruses while "This Is The New Shit" nails a Korn-inflected groove. The set's down-tempo title track is built around a haunting piano line, and "(s)AINT" deftly captures the Powerman 5000 style. The album track most likely to get extensive re-mixing is the incredibly catchy "Ka-boom Ka-boom." THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way.

Originally released on Riverside (233). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.Digitally remasterd by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).THE HAWK THAT FLIES HIGH is a swingin' small group session lead by Coleman Hawkins in 1957. This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano). The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

  • Personnel: Lal Waterson, Maria Gilhooley (vocals); Oliver Knight (guitar); Jody Stecher (mandolin); Chopper (cello).Although Lal Waterson's recording career stretches back to the '60s, and has subsequently seen remarkable collaborations with sister Norma (A TRUE HEARTED GIRL) and brother Mike (BRIGHT PHOEBUS), greatest acclaim came in 1996 with ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, her first collaboration with son Oliver Knight. Sessions for its successor were cut short by Lal's death. Rather like the posthumous Janis Joplin album PEARL, A BED OF ROSES had to be completed after the singer's demise. This probably explains the inclusion of two instrumentals by Knight and the reappearance of a song from the previous album ("At First She Starts"), albeit in a radically different, solo rendition.A BED OF ROSES can't hope to have the impact of its predecessor, but listeners hoping for more in the same vein won't be disappointed. Lal's voice and lyrics remain remarkable. Accompaniment is sparse. Maria Gilhooley harmonises on Ewan MacColl's "Just a Note." Charles O'Connor's strings enhance "Foolish One." Mandolin, cello, trombone, and saxophone make one-off appearances. Most often the only accompaniment is the limpid resonance of Oliver Knight's guitar and Lal's own occasional vocal harmonies. A BED OF ROSES is tinged with the poignant knowledge that Lal's voice and pen have been stilled.

  • This is a collection of Henry Kaiser's solo guitar improvisations from 1973 (a year after he began playing the guitar) to 1991. Some of the tracks are culled from the out-of-print albums IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and DEVIL IN THE DRAIN. Others were recorded specifically for this collection, were previously un-issued, or are from works which are either still available or have been reconfigured in some manner.A sense of playfulness pervades much of the work. "Red Shadows" features a midi-guitar triggering piano sounds that approach a Conlon Nancarrow-like flurry. In "Novelty Act," Kaiser's guitar simulates the varied sections of an orchestra (evoking an oblique game of call-and-response). "Meet the Flintstones" is not the television theme song, but rather an autobiographical tale that Kaiser weaves while accompanying himself on guitar. As always, the pieces are cleanly recorded, and this album serves as a fine introduction to Kaiser's improvisational work.

  • PERSEVERANCIA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album.Puerto Rican salsa star Tito Rojas continues his winning streak of solo albums with PERSEVERANCIA. A lively outing carried by the charming vocals of Rojas, this set is highly rhythmic and immediately infectious. Songs such as "Me Enamoro Mas de Ti" and "Me Tiene Enamorao" shuffle giddily along, lifted by excellent horn arrangements, while "Como a Ti Te Gusta" features a slightly melancholy undercurrent. Overall, the proceedings are undeniably upbeat, and any listener will have a hard time resisting the urge to get up and dance to Rojas and his accomplished band of musicians.

  • Cypress Hill: Eric Bobo (rap vocals, drums); B-Real, Sen Dog (rap vocals); DJ Muggs (turntables).Additional personnel includes: Redman, Method Man, Kurupt, Kokane, M.C. Ren, King Tee (rap vocals); Christian Olde Wolbers (guitar, bass); Mike Sims (guitar, Moog synthesizer); Jeremy Flenner, Andy Zambrano, Rogelio Lozano (guitar); Jessy Moss (background vocals).Recorded at Ameraycan Studios, Hollywood, California. While most of the rock and rap acts that emerged successfully in 1991 have gone the way of the Arsenio Hall show, Cypress Hill remains a significant and innovative force in both genres. Blazing a gold and platinum trail that has spawned many copycat groups, Cypress continues to keep it real on its 10th-anniversary album STONED RAIDERS. Kurupt guests on "Kronologik," a hip-hop account of the band's highs and lows. M.C. Ren kicks it old-school style on "Southland Killers." A luscious surf guitar chord blends with B-Real's verses and Bobo's percussion on "Bitter." "Amplified" is equally riveting with its funky retro groove. Redman and Method Man's blunt-infected rhymes flow perfectly with B-Real's on "Red, Meth & B." RAIDERS shows off all the musical sides of Cypress Hill, from street-level hip-hop to crunchy metal riffs to a flamenco guitar solo, and consequently takes the Cypress experience to the next level.
