Tyner's energies as a session leader, composer, and ever-progressive musician haven't flagged since the mid-'60's, when the pianist started heading his own dates. On this 2004 album, as per usual, Tyner has surrounded himself with some of the finest personnel in jazz, including bassist Christian McBride, sax player Gary Bartz, and trumpeter Terence Blanchard.Tyner's music is appealing for its balance of familiar hard-bop vocabulary and intricately wrought structures--it is rhythmic and accessible, yet intellectually engaging. Tyner plays with great vigor, mixing virtuoso classical flourishes with bold chords and dazzlingly complex solos. His compositions here touch on avant-bebop ("The Chase"), Latin groove ("Angelina"), and smooth swing (the title track--on which all the musicians get a chance to stretch out). Blanchard's playing is especially notable, substantiating the melody lines in the chorus and blazing on the solos (as on "New Orleans Stomp," driven by a classic second-line beat). The high quality of music here--in conception and execution--should come as no surprise to long-time fans of Tyner or his sidemen.

Personnel: Lal Waterson, Maria Gilhooley (vocals); Oliver Knight (guitar); Jody Stecher (mandolin); Chopper (cello).Although Lal Waterson's recording career stretches back to the '60s, and has subsequently seen remarkable collaborations with sister Norma (A TRUE HEARTED GIRL) and brother Mike (BRIGHT PHOEBUS), greatest acclaim came in 1996 with ONCE IN A BLUE MOON, her first collaboration with son Oliver Knight. Sessions for its successor were cut short by Lal's death. Rather like the posthumous Janis Joplin album PEARL, A BED OF ROSES had to be completed after the singer's demise. This probably explains the inclusion of two instrumentals by Knight and the reappearance of a song from the previous album ("At First She Starts"), albeit in a radically different, solo rendition.A BED OF ROSES can't hope to have the impact of its predecessor, but listeners hoping for more in the same vein won't be disappointed. Lal's voice and lyrics remain remarkable. Accompaniment is sparse. Maria Gilhooley harmonises on Ewan MacColl's "Just a Note." Charles O'Connor's strings enhance "Foolish One." Mandolin, cello, trombone, and saxophone make one-off appearances. Most often the only accompaniment is the limpid resonance of Oliver Knight's guitar and Lal's own occasional vocal harmonies. A BED OF ROSES is tinged with the poignant knowledge that Lal's voice and pen have been stilled.

PERSEVERANCIA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Salsa/Merengue Album.Puerto Rican salsa star Tito Rojas continues his winning streak of solo albums with PERSEVERANCIA. A lively outing carried by the charming vocals of Rojas, this set is highly rhythmic and immediately infectious. Songs such as "Me Enamoro Mas de Ti" and "Me Tiene Enamorao" shuffle giddily along, lifted by excellent horn arrangements, while "Como a Ti Te Gusta" features a slightly melancholy undercurrent. Overall, the proceedings are undeniably upbeat, and any listener will have a hard time resisting the urge to get up and dance to Rojas and his accomplished band of musicians.

Soft Machine: Elton Dean (alto saxophone, electric piano); Mike Ratledge (electric piano, organ); Hugh Hopper (bass guitar); John Marshall (drums).Recording information: Paris, France (05/02/1972).Those whose interest in British jazz-rock legend Soft Machine ceases at the point where drummer/singer Robert Wyatt left the band in 1971 stand to have their preconceptions shattered by this two-disc live recording of the band's subsequent phase. One of numerous revelatory live Soft Machine recordings released posthumously by Cuneiform Records, LIVE IN PARIS catches the group in transition. With John Marshall (former bandmate of UK free-jazzer Keith Tippett) replacing Wyatt, Soft Machine moved definitively away from rock trappings toward a jazzier, more cerebral approach that further accentuated the improvisatory abilities of keyboardist Mike Ratledge and saxman Elton Dean.They prove themselves fully able to tackle the bulk of their landmark Wyatt-era album THIRD here. However, tracks that would appear shortly after this May '72 concert on FIFTH show the band flexing new muscles. Dean's post-Coltrane solos and Ratledge's trademark fuzz-organ lines bob and weave through tunes that show the quartet to be no slouches in the compositional department (of course Dean, Ratledge and bassist Hugh Hopper had already contributed mightily to the band's songbook before Wyatt left). Three of these tracks would never make it to the studio, as this mighty lineup would splinter before FIFTH was even released, making LIVE IN PARIS all the more special.

This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano).The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

Raw cuts like "Blows to the Temple" demonstrate why, and give listeners a glimpse at a legend in the making.With CAN I BORROW A DOLLAR?, a younger, more careless Common was simply out to demonstrate his talents to a nation obsessed with New York and L.A. rap. The lo-fi beat structure of the album is reminiscent of the music of the early '90s, when heavy jazz and funk influences dominated East Coast hip-hop. Though the disc is layered with gritty beats and samples that now seem familiar, they seem vibrant when put into context with other material of the same era. The Beatnuts offer one of their early productions on "Heidi Hoe," a track that may shock listeners who are used to Common's more reflective, socially aware lyrics of today. While certainly not his best work, die-hard fans won't be disappointed.
