Antonio Vivaldi is best known for his many string concertos, yet he excelled in almost every genre. Vivaldi wrote countless chamber works, dozens of fine operas, solo voice motets, and sublime sacred choral works. Vivaldi's greatest choral works were written while he served as maestro of the famous Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. The Pieta was an orphanage for girls and Vivaldi wrote some of his most demanding music for his gifted students.The works on this disc display all the hallmarks of Vivaldi's mature style: melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality and a keen sense of drama. The orchestral accompaniment for these works is filled with the same color and lyrical richness that's found in Vivaldi's many concertos. There are many glorious moments in this music, perhaps the most memorable is the heavenly ascending vocal line of "Exortum est in tenebris" from the motet, "Beatus vir." Soprano Susan Gritton sings the work with crystal clear intonation and tonal beauty. The performances by all the vocal soloists and the excellent period instrument ensemble, the Kings Consort, make a very strong case for these little known but remarkable works.

Corigliano's Quartet received the award for "Best Classical Contemporary Composition."The Cleveland Quartet always brought something very special to the world of chamber music. Other quartets give powerful and dynamic performances, other quartets play well, but the Cleveland Quartet had something personal and intimate. It is as if they were old friends over for dinner. Their presence will be missed, and this farewell recording is a great way to remember them.The Haydn is supple with perfect intonation and an excellent sense of structure. William Preucil's leadership is impeccable, and the sonorities are particularly beautiful in the slow movement. The last movement really flies. This is the premiere recording of the Corigliano Quartet. This work was written in 1995 and is one of Corigliano's most structured and compact. Built in an arch form, it uses the quartet in a way that resembles Bartￃﾳk's quartet writing. The second movement has tremendous rhythmic energy and the third is sweet and ethereal. The Cleveland Quartet, even it its last season, shows here that it was one of the best quartets of all time.

Even a brief perusal of the many "best of" collections on the market shows that Armstrong had too many sides to pin down with a few tracks. There is Armstrong, the cornet virtuoso, playing with the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens; there's Armstrong, the gruff-voiced singer, who could turn a throwaway lyric into poetry; there is Armstrong, the pop star, fronting a big band; and there is Armstrong, the "Ambassador of Goodwill," performing with his touring All-Stars.Despite a cover photo from much later, Intersound's BEST OF wisely sticks to a single period of Armstrong's career-namely his early days fronting small groups. The booklet provides little information about the particular recordings, but they are primarily taken from the Hot Fives and Sevens of the late 1920s. These are the performances that made Armstrong a star-"Mahogany Hall Stomp," "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Heebie Jeebies," his first foray into scat.
