"Grey Area" employs the talents of guitarist Adam Rogers to give the track a hard-edged fusion sound reminiscent of early Brecker Brothers music. "The Hottest Man In Town, a recording made by Brecker's father, when the junior Brecker was only two weeks old, predicting Randy's future as an innovative jazz musican.

  • All tracks have been digitally remastered. Not so much a greatest-hits album as an exercise in what you can do with a few good backing riddims and a plethora of tuneful artistes, DANCEHALL CULTURE is an 18-track voyage through the repertoire of the best reggae and dancehall tracks the Easy Star label has to offer. Veteran singer Frankie Paul, sounding huskier with age but no less tuneful than of yore, contributes "Just One Moment Away," a lovers rock variation on the seminal old school "Cool Down" rhythm. Anthony B's "Third Eye Blind" is a slice of modern-day Rasta delivered in vintage roots style over a percolating "Thai Stick" backing track. A refreshing, airy highlight of the set is dancehall classicist Half Pint's irresistible "Love Potion Number 9," a litany of things with which to do your woman right.Anthony B's coruscating anti-abortion disputation "Love So Divine" is a curious combination of dancehall and polemic that'll be sure to lead to some heated debates on the dancefloor, while "Hit Tune," Guyanese's interpretation of the same rhythm delivered in almost impenetrable patois, is as cheerfully airheaded as its predecessor is self-righteously apocalyptic. For good measure DANCEHALL CULTURE includes a few smooth instrumental dub versions.

  • Includes liner notes by Don Kennedy.Digitally remastered by Gary Rice.Trying to capture Louis Armstrong's best on a single CD is a hopeless task. Even a brief perusal of the many "best of" collections on the market shows that Armstrong had too many sides to pin down with a few tracks. There is Armstrong, the cornet virtuoso, playing with the Hot Fives and Hot Sevens; there's Armstrong, the gruff-voiced singer, who could turn a throwaway lyric into poetry; there is Armstrong, the pop star, fronting a big band; and there is Armstrong, the "Ambassador of Goodwill," performing with his touring All-Stars.Despite a cover photo from much later, Intersound's BEST OF wisely sticks to a single period of Armstrong's career-namely his early days fronting small groups. The booklet provides little information about the particular recordings, but they are primarily taken from the Hot Fives and Sevens of the late 1920s. These are the performances that made Armstrong a star-"Mahogany Hall Stomp," "Cornet Chop Suey," and "Heebie Jeebies," his first foray into scat. Digital remastering has rendered these songs in a slightly different light, punching up the sound while adding a "modern" touch of reverb. In any event, these recordings are required listening for every red-blooded American.

Johnson (trombone); Hank Jones (piano); Barry Galbraith (guitar); Oscar Pettiford (bass); Jo Jones (drums).Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on March 12 & 15, 1957. Originally released on Riverside (233). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.Digitally remasterd by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).THE HAWK THAT FLIES HIGH is a swingin' small group session lead by Coleman Hawkins in 1957. This album features the then-young bebop musicians J.J. Johnson (trombone), Idrees Sulieman (trumpet), Barry Galbraith (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), and the great Hank Jones (piano). The rhythm section plays with a quieter, calmer approach to the music best evidenced by the opening track "Chant." However, early hard-bop is heard on tracks such as "Juicy Fruit" and "Blue Lights." Refusing to be pigeon-holed, Hawkins returns to his swing roots with "Sanctity." This is one of Hawk's best efforts from to come out of the 1950s.

  • Personnel: Yusef Lateef, Ron Carter, Hugh Lawson, Herman Wright, Lex Humphries. Recorded in May 1960.Yusef Lateef is one of jazz's most fascinating instrumentalists. His experiments with flute and particularly oboe and bassoon have made Lateef much more than just another fine tenor saxophonist. On this 1960 release (produced by Orrin Keepnews), we hear the many sides to Lateef's musical personality. Indeed, the title undoubtedly refers to Lateef's interest in sax, flute and oboe respectively. Given this, track one, "Goin' Home" is a medium-tempo swing that highlights Lateef's refined, smoky tenor sound. However, on the next track, Lateef switches to oboe, navigating his way through Duke Ellington's bluesy chart, "I'm Just a Lucky So and So." Other tunes such as "Lateef's Minor 7th" and "Adoration" feature Lateef's soaring flute chops. In general, the music on THE THREE FACES OF YUSEF LATEEF showcases the reed man's straight-ahead jazz skill as well his penchant for experimental composition. The latter is best epitomized by the semi-classical piece, "From Within" written by Lateef himself and featuring pianist Hugh Lawson on celeste, drummer Lex Humphries on timpani, and bassist Ron Carter on cello.

  • This disc explores what composer Barton McLean calls "aspects of celebration, ritual, or ceremony that bring people together."McLean's 'Ritual of Dawn,' scored for winds, harp and piano, is a re-creation of an ancient religious ceremony. This is delicately shaded music with a gentle, hypnotic pulse. 'Forgotten Shadows' samples sound bytes taken from an art exhibition, juxtaposed with snippets of tunes that were popular in the first quarter of the 20th century. Strange as this may sound, it does work. The variety of sound images wed to the familiar old tunes makes for an Ives-like sonic collage.Best of all is 'Happy Days,' a lighthearted work scored for a battery of buzzers, horns, whistles, music boxes and synthesizers. Once again, McLean weaves dizzying patterns of sound that swirl with a quirky rhythm and soothe with melodic grace. This is provocative music with a playful, child-like heart.
