  • Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); George Duvivier, Charles Mingus (bass); Max Roach, Art Taylor (drums).Recorded live at Massey Hall, Toronto, Canada and in New York, New York in 1953. Originally released as a 10 inch LP on Debut (3).Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The centerpiece of JAZZ AT MASSEY HALL is a Bud Powell trio performance recorded in Toronto's Massey Hall in 1953. This concert marked a return for Powell to the concert scene after a one-year absence due to illness. While there are many compelling performances on the release--not only by Bud, but also by his bandmates, bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach--as a whole, this release is an intriguing hybrid. Also included here are excerpts from a nightclub performance during the summer of that year, with Powell joined by George Duvivier (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). Accordingly, the sonic quality of the nightclub cuts carries a loose, off-the-cuff feel, while the Massey Hall concert is appropriately fuller sounding. Mingus is well represented here--his composition "Bass-ically Speaking" is included in this reissue, and it is a fine example of Mingus's work. Powell is at his best on "Embraceable You" and "Sure Thing," two Massey Hall cuts that display an expressive undertone and an uncanny connection with the audience.

  • This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Personnel includes: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); Robert Trujillo (bass); Mike Bordin (drums).Recorded live at Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan on February 15, 2002.Fans fretting that Ozzy's reputation has been transformed into that of a distaff Robert Young thanks to the runaway success of the MTV reality show The Osbournes can breathe a sigh of relief upon hearing the fire-breathing performance rendered on LIVE AT BUDOKAN. Fronting a quartet that includes longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde (latest in a long line of hot-shot guitarists dating back to the late Randy Rhodes), Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo, and Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin, the Ozzman is in ferociously fine form.Hop-scotching through his considerable canon with Wylde providing molten riffs throughout, Ozzy delivers scalding versions of classics ranging from "I Don't Know" and "Crazy Train" to an over-the-top reading of "Mr. Crowley" juiced up by John Sinclair's ominous keyboard intro. Ozzy shows his range with the prog-metal psychedelia of "No More Tears," the heartfelt emoting that defines the smash power ballad "Mama I'm Coming Home," and the soaring semi-autobiography "Road To Nowhere." Although the only Sabbath number included in this set is the overplayed "Paranoid," the rest of LIVE AT BUDOKAN crackles with the kind of energy that you're not going to find on a re-run of Father Knows Best.

  • Personnel: Yusef Lateef, Ron Carter, Hugh Lawson, Herman Wright, Lex Humphries. Recorded in May 1960.Yusef Lateef is one of jazz's most fascinating instrumentalists. His experiments with flute and particularly oboe and bassoon have made Lateef much more than just another fine tenor saxophonist. On this 1960 release (produced by Orrin Keepnews), we hear the many sides to Lateef's musical personality. Indeed, the title undoubtedly refers to Lateef's interest in sax, flute and oboe respectively. Given this, track one, "Goin' Home" is a medium-tempo swing that highlights Lateef's refined, smoky tenor sound. However, on the next track, Lateef switches to oboe, navigating his way through Duke Ellington's bluesy chart, "I'm Just a Lucky So and So." Other tunes such as "Lateef's Minor 7th" and "Adoration" feature Lateef's soaring flute chops. In general, the music on THE THREE FACES OF YUSEF LATEEF showcases the reed man's straight-ahead jazz skill as well his penchant for experimental composition. The latter is best epitomized by the semi-classical piece, "From Within" written by Lateef himself and featuring pianist Hugh Lawson on celeste, drummer Lex Humphries on timpani, and bassist Ron Carter on cello.
