Villa-Lobos: Sacred Choral Music

This release present a selection of sacred choral music by Brazil's most famous composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos, performed by one of Hyperion's best-loved recording groups, the Corydon Singers. Walter Winslow's music covers a lot of ground, with influences ranging from the classical canon to Tahitian and Aztec folk music. These are all evident in the pieces in this collection, a loving tribute to his music recorded shortly after Winslow's untimely death in 1998.'Concertati Veneziani,' his last completed work, is a musical tribute to Venice, but within it one can hear a reverent homage to all of European concert music. Strains of dense counterpoint bring the late Beethoven quartets to mind while static moments of sustained harmonics and isolated single-note events reveal it as a twentieth century piece.Winslow makes a more modern foray into solo clarinet writing in 'The Mirror of Diana,' yet captures a timeless atmosphere with some primitivist, Stravinskian motives. The six 'Paripari' (Tahitian District Songs) are inspired by the choral music of Tahiti. Written for solo voice and piano, the songs can only hint at the microtonal gliding texture of Tahitian choirs; they are western art songs with Tahitian texts and exotic melodies.

Devotees of choral music of the 20th century shouldn't wait a moment longer to pick up this program of works by PUPILS OF MESSIAEN. The Danish National Radio Choir has these difficult works well in their voices, and the likelihood of finding such a generous and well-performed sampling of avant-garde vocal works elsewhere is small.This is not music for the faint-hearted; listeners familiar with Messiaen's 'O sacrum convivium!' should be warned that it seems out of place in this program with its lush, largely homophonic texture.The remainder of the program is, however, highly rewarding on repeated listening. Fans of choral music and mid-20th century music alike should be quite pleased to have taken a chance on this set of modern a cappella masterworks.

Antonio Vivaldi is best known for his many string concertos, yet he excelled in almost every genre. Vivaldi wrote countless chamber works, dozens of fine operas, solo voice motets, and sublime sacred choral works. Vivaldi's greatest choral works were written while he served as maestro of the famous Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. The Pieta was an orphanage for girls and Vivaldi wrote some of his most demanding music for his gifted students.The works on this disc display all the hallmarks of Vivaldi's mature style: melodic inventiveness, rhythmic vitality and a keen sense of drama. The orchestral accompaniment for these works is filled with the same color and lyrical richness that's found in Vivaldi's many concertos. There are many glorious moments in this music, perhaps the most memorable is the heavenly ascending vocal line of "Exortum est in tenebris" from the motet, "Beatus vir." Soprano Susan Gritton sings the work with crystal clear intonation and tonal beauty. The performances by all the vocal soloists and the excellent period instrument ensemble, the Kings Consort, make a very strong case for these little known but remarkable works.
